New legislation was passed in March 2013 by the NSW Government to prevent children falling from windows.
All windows above the ground floor in any existing residential strata schemes must be fitted with a lock or safety device which prevents the window opening more than 12.5cm.
Owners corporations will have 5 years to fit these devices retrospectively.
Minister for Fair Trading Anthony Roberts said the installation of window safety devices in New York had resulted in a 96% reduction in child fall hospital admissions.
The new laws are in line with changes to the Building Code of Australia which made window safety devices compulsory in new residential buildings from 1 May 2013.
There is a lot of misleading information out there about Certification of window restrictors and testing. Don't pay for an expensive certificate if you don't need one ! Fair Traiding NSW website states as of 20/05/2017 :
It is not necessary to hire a consultant to do an initial assessment or to use accredited installers. Owners corporations may simply get quotes from a range of appropriately qualified tradespeople and then choose the best one. It is also not necessary to have the windows or locks certified, or to have them tested to determine if they comply.
